The European Union (EU) enacted a rule some 5 months ago prohibiting travel restrictions due to the coronovirus epidemic. But recent steps taken by some European Union countries have published positive news for couples separating from their partners. In early July, only Denmark allowed the couple to reunite but now 7 countries have lifted travel restrictions on couples.

Countries banning couples for travel include Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Iceland, Austria, the Czech Republic and the latest entry, Switzerland.

Ever since the ban came, social media has been flooded with campaigns to remove such restrictions. Of all the campaigns, the hashtags #LoveIsNotTourism, #LoveIsEssential and #DoItLikeDenmark gained a lot of popularity and traction. The fruitful response was in addition to the 7 countries that have lifted travel restrictions on couples. The campaign received the support of citizens, politicians and celebrities.

Norway lifted the ban on romantic partners and family members from 15 July. Partners should officially announce that their relationship has lasted for more than 9 months and that they have met once before (via boarding passes etc.). Proof of stay is also required for 10-day quarantine.

3. Netherlands

Authorities lifted ban on couple travel from 27 July. The new rules apply to Dutch, European Union and Swiss residents in long-distance relationships. The relationship must be at least 3 months old and have seen each other twice before the ban. The proof includes hotel booking, airline tickets etc.

4. Czech Republic

The Czech Republic lifted the ban on checks with permanent partners in Corona-restricted counties from 20 July. Authorities have implemented strict guidelines and announcements for the visit. Waves are given to those who do not usually require a check visa for travel.

5. Iceland

In Iceland, the rules are less permissible and only allow travel for live-in couples. The partners of Icelanders (or people from the European Union and the UK) fall within the permissions. Details can be obtained by sending a request mail Visa@utn.is. The country has also made compulsory Kovid-19 test mandatory before admission.

6. Austria

Authorities in Austria feel that “it is now possible that people travel the country for family reasons, including companionship, marriage, etc.” American arrivals must show a negative Kovid-19 certificate or a 10-day mandatory home quarantine. Austria ran a famous social media campaign called “Love Without Borders”.

7. Switzerland

Switzerland is the most recent addition of European Union countries to open borders for love. This order came into force on 3 August. It represents anyone in the world, who has a partner in Switzerland, will be allowed to enter if they are provided with “proof of relationship”. The rule follows that the partner was in a relationship for some time and met at least once before playing on a travel ban.
