The imagery for The World Islands in Dubai was conceived by the famous Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Makhtoum, the ruler of Dubai. Developed by Nakhel Projects, the construction of the islands was carried out by Van Ord and Boskalis, the same company that built the Palm Jumeirah. The construction of a cluster of 300 islands began in the year 2003, but had to be halted in the year 2008 due to some financial issues. To date, Dubai has only about 2 to 3 islands in the world that are fully functional and open for commercial use, and there have been reports that due to improper foundations, the islands may sink back into the water.
