History of Orchha Fort
The fort was built soon after the establishment of Orchha in 1501 by Rudra Pratap Singh, Bundela Rajput. Shortly thereafter, the fort was expanded – palaces and temples were built inside the complex. Of all this, Raja Mahal or Raja Mandir, built by Madhukar Shah during his reign from 1554 to 1591, is the most popular palace to date. Sawan Bhadon Mahal and Jahangir Mahal were built by Veer Singh Dev between 1605-1627.
Today we call all these monuments Orchha Fort. It is believed that the British influenced the fort to form the Lutyens’ Zone in Delhi, which is a monumental piece of architecture.
